What Buyers Are Really Buying
When a buyer acquires a business, they’re betting on future performance. A strong management team provides confidence that operations will continue, customers will be retained, and the business will grow — even after the original owner is gone. Without that team, buyers see higher risk and price accordingly.
Key Management Roles That Increase Value
Operations Manager: Someone who can handle day-to-day workflow, scheduling, vendor relationships, and quality control without needing owner involvement.
Sales Leader: A person who manages the sales pipeline, client relationships, and new business development independently. This is especially important if the owner has historically been the primary salesperson.
Financial Controller or Bookkeeper: Someone responsible for financial reporting, AP/AR management, and cash flow visibility. Buyers want to see financial oversight that doesn’t depend on the owner.
How Long Should Your Team Be in Place?
Ideally, your key managers have been in their roles for at least 12–24 months before you go to market. This demonstrates proven performance, not just potential. Buyers will want to interview key team members as part of their due diligence, and having tenured, confident leaders makes a strong impression.
What About Retention After the Sale?
Buyers often negotiate retention bonuses or employment agreements for key managers as part of the purchase agreement. As a seller, this is actually a positive — it shows you have people worth retaining. You can structure the deal to ensure your team is compensated and incentivized to stay through the transition.
